What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are a cosmetic dental treatment used to improve the appearance of teeth. They are very thin, custom-made shells made of porcelain or composite resin that is bonded to the front surface of teeth to mask discolouration, chips, and cracks; and to brighten teeth.

Porcelain vs Composite veneers

Porcelain Veneers are a popular choice for cosmetic dentistry. They can cover chipped and broken teeth, by bonding wafer-thin shells (0.3 – 1.00 mm) of hand-made porcelain over your existing teeth, thus creating a natural-looking appearance and enhancing your smile.

Porcelain veneers are also stain-resistant and typically maintain their color better than natural teeth with proper care. While they resist staining from coffee, tea, and red wine better than natural teeth, individual results vary based on oral hygiene and lifestyle factors. If you are considering dental veneers, be sure to consult with a qualified cosmetic dentist to determine if they are the right choice for you.

Composite Veneers are composed of engineered resin and other materials which adhere to the outer surface of your teeth, and they have a different and possibly less natural appearance. They are less durable than porcelain veneers, with more chance of chipping and staining.

Why choose The Applecross Dentist?

  • We utilise Digital Smile Design (DSD) technology for planning veneers and cosmetic treatments. Dr Lily Taheri holds Mastership certification in DSD and is credentialed in its clinical application, having trained in New York with Dr Christian Coachman, founder of Digital Smile Design.
  • We provide comprehensive cosmetic dental care with a facially driven approach. We assess not only your teeth, but also your gums, lips, jaw, and facial proportions using high-resolution photography and 3D digital scans. This allows us to create a detailed digital model to plan your smile in harmony with your facial features, oral health, and treatment goals..
  • You can trial your proposed new smile before treatment begins. Using 3D printed mock-ups created from your digital design, you are able to see and physically experience your proposed smile rather than simply visualising it.
  •  You are able to provide feedback and request refinements before any dental treatment begins. Working closely with Dr Lily, adjustments can be made to shape, length, and overall design to ensure the proposed result aligns with your goals.
  • We also utilise smile design libraries of natural tooth forms to guide treatment planning. This helps ensure results are balanced, natural-looking, and tailored to your facial proportions.
  • Digital planning can help visualize potential outcomes. Individual results vary.

Our unique Porcelain Veneers Smile makeover process

Step 1 : Treatment Planning with Initial Consultation and Personalised Digital Smile Design

All our smile makeover cases begin with a consultation. It begins with the most important person, you. This is where we listen to your story, your concerns, your smile aspirations and your goals. Your facial composition will be meticulously examined, by taking alignment, symmetry and proportion into consideration.

Measurements are taken of your lips, face shape and the arrangement of your teeth. Three dimensional photos & videos of every angle of your mouth are scanned digitally by an intra-oral scanner and the data is imported into our exclusive DSD software to start designing your smile.

Using natural prototype technology we copy & paste natural teeth shapes and specifications into your veneers or crowns. You can enhance your current teeth or even ask us to copy paste a family member’s teeth that you like into your new smile.

We also have a library of smiles that you can choose from and test drive, this is unique to DSD Clinicians. Our design process is not only about the aesthetics, we will assess the way you speak, smile and bite, while also understanding what your smile looks like to ensure an accurate smile design.

Step 2: Test drive & trial of your design

Our unique protocol gives you a chance to test drive your new smile before committing to treatment. This is a key part of our Digital Smile Design approach, carried out by DSD certified Master clinicians.

Before any dental intervention takes place, we use high-precision digital planning and printing technology to create a mock-up of your new smile that has been designed specifically for you. A prototype that you can wear, see and feel.

It’s a carefully designed trial stage where a temporary mock-up is placed, allowing you to preview and experience your proposed new smile.

This process also allows us to clearly communicate the intended treatment outcome with you. This helps ensure alignment between you and your clinician, and gives you the opportunity to provide feedback and request refinements before treatment begins.

Once you are satisfied with the proposed design, we develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals.

Step 3: Preparation stage and Temporary Veneers application

At this appointment, your teeth will be carefully prepared for your final porcelain veneers based on your approved smile design. Our preparation protocols are guided by modern additive and biomimetic dentistry principles, with a strong focus on preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible. In most cases, only minimal enamel refinement is required — typically around 0.3–0.5mm — to create the space needed for natural-looking, precisely fitting restorations.

Once your preparations are complete, highly detailed 3D scans of your teeth and bite will be taken and sent to our experienced master ceramists, who will meticulously handcraft your final veneers. You will leave the appointment with custom temporary veneers placed over your prepared teeth, allowing you to experience the proposed smile design while your final restorations are being created.

During this visit, we will also carefully finalise the shade selection of your veneers to ensure the final result complements your facial features and overall smile design.

Porcelain Veneers are durable and look natural

At this appointment, we will prepare your teeth for fitting of your final Porcelain veneers based on your approved design. Our design protocols are based on new additive & biomimetic dentistry principles which makes our veneer preps minimally invasive to your natural tooth structure. Once the preparations are completed, new impressions from your teeth and bite will be taken to be sent off to our master ceramists for handcrafting your final veneers. You will walk out with your temporary veneers which are placed on your prepped teeth. At this appointment, we further discuss and decide on the shade of your final veneers.

Step 4: Try In / Cementation

Once your final Porcelain Veneers are completed by our highly experienced senior master ceramist, we will gently remove your temporary veneers and try in your final veneers with temporary cement, allowing you to review your new smile before permanent cementation. Once both you and your dentist are completely happy with the fit and aesthetics of your new Porcelain Veneers, we will permanently cement them and you’re ready to enjoy your new smile.

Frequently Asked Questions About Porcelain Veneers

Considering porcelain veneers? These thin shells of porcelain are bonded to the front surface of teeth to address various aesthetic concerns. Below are answers to commonly asked questions about the treatment process, outcomes, and care.

Individual treatment experiences and results vary significantly based on oral health, healing response, and specific dental needs. A comprehensive consultation is required to assess your suitability and discuss realistic expectations for your specific situation.

Porcelain veneers may be considered for various aesthetic preferences:

    • Tooth alignment concerns
    • Tooth discolouration or staining
    • Surface irregularities
    • Damaged or decayed teeth
    • Size preferences for individual teeth
    • Teeth prone to chipping or breaking

Patients considering porcelain veneers often ask about potential outcomes. Individual results vary significantly, and not all patients will experience the same results. Reported outcomes may include:

    • Enhanced tooth appearance (results vary between individuals)
    • Improved tooth shape and proportion in some cases
    • Better stain resistance compared to natural teeth when properly maintained
    • Addressing minor alignment issues (major orthodontic problems require specialist treatment)
    • Covering chips, cracks, or surface irregularities
    • Long-lasting, natural-looking results when properly cared for

Individual results vary based on oral health, healing response, and other factors. Consultation required to assess treatment suitability and realistic expectations for porcelain veneer treatment.

This procedure involves permanent removal of tooth enamel. Your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from the front of your teeth before the veneer is fitted so that it will bond well and create a natural appearance. Individual results and experiences vary.

Porcelain veneers can last for many years with proper care and maintenance. Individual experiences with veneer longevity may vary.

Porcelain veneers typically require two or more dental visits to complete the procedure. Individual treatment timelines may vary based on case complexity and specific requirements.

Most dental insurance plans do not cover the cost of porcelain veneers, as they are considered to be cosmetic procedures. However, we offer payment plans to cover your treatment. Call us today and speak to our team about available options.

Alternatives to porcelain veneers include composite veneers, dental bonding, and teeth whitening. Your dentist can provide more information about the most suitable option for your individual needs. Treatment outcomes vary depending on the chosen approach and individual circumstances.

Porcelain veneers require the same care and maintenance as natural teeth. This includes regular brushing and flossing, as well as regular dental check-ups to ensure that the veneers are in good condition. It is also important to avoid biting on hard objects or using teeth as tools, as this can cause the veneers to chip or break. Individual experiences with veneer longevity may vary.

If you’re considering dental veneers, it’s important to understand the associated costs and factors that influence pricing. On average, the cost of veneers ranges from $1500 to $2,200 per tooth, depending on the type of material used and the complexity of the procedure. Individual treatment costs may vary based on specific requirements.

Porcelain veneers are commonly chosen for their durability and natural appearance. At the Applecross Dentist, we offer a wide range of payment plans for cosmetic dental procedures, helping make treatment more accessible.

Many patients report satisfaction with their veneer outcomes. Individual results and experiences vary significantly. When selecting a cosmetic dentist in Perth, consider inquiring about financing options and consultations to help you make an informed decision about your dental care.

At the Applecross Dentist, we provide a variety of flexible payment plans for cosmetic dental procedures, including dental veneers. Our goal is to make treatment more accessible and reduce financial barriers to care. Contact us today to discuss the options we offer and find a suitable plan for your situation!

If your teeth are stained or discoloured and don’t respond to whitening treatments, veneers may be able to alter the appearance of your teeth. Individual results vary. Veneers can also treat minor chips and cracks, and change or recontour the shape of your teeth if necessary. The use of the veneer can also correct slightly misaligned teeth which do not require further orthodontic treatment.

Porcelain veneers can be difficult to remove if you change your mind at a later date, and changes in your teeth in future years could cause the veneer to crack. It is important to maintain excellent oral hygiene to reduce the risk of dental decay around the edges of the veneer. Your dentist will provide guidance on proper dental care to minimise these risks. Individual experiences and outcomes may vary.
