Why I Chose Dentistry: Dr Lily Taheri’s Journey
Many people assume I always knew I wanted to become a dentist, but my path into dentistry actually began with a childhood accident that had a lasting impact on my life.
The Childhood Experience That Inspired My Career
When I was 12 years old, I had a serious accident at school that badly damaged one of my front teeth. The months that followed were filled with uncertainty. I worried about losing my tooth, how my smile would look, and whether my appearance would ever be the same again. At that age, I didn’t realise just how closely confidence could be connected to a healthy smile.
Thankfully, I received dental treatment that not only restored my tooth but also changed the way I viewed dentistry. I experienced first-hand how important it is to support someone through a difficult and emotional situation. That experience helped me understand the lasting effect dental trauma can have, especially on young people, and it ultimately inspired me to pursue dentistry as a career.
Running Two Dental Practices While Raising a Family
Today, I have the privilege of owning and operating two dental clinics in Perth while also being a mum to two young boys. It is a role I truly enjoy, although balancing both responsibilities can be challenging.
Like many working parents, I often move between very different roles throughout the day. My time is spent treating patients, mentoring my team, overseeing two busy practices, making business decisions, and then heading home to focus on family life. Some days feel incredibly busy, and there never seem to be enough hours.
One of the greatest challenges is giving both my patients and my family the attention they deserve. Dentistry involves much more than providing treatment. Patients place their trust in you, often when they are experiencing pain, anxiety or uncertainty. At the same time, my children rely on me completely. While both roles require commitment, they are equally rewarding, and I feel grateful to be able to do both.
Why Dentistry Continues to Inspire Me
Growing up, I loved art, architecture and design. I was fascinated by balance, symmetry and the unique characteristics that make every person different. Cosmetic and restorative dentistry allow me to combine those interests every day.
One of my favourite moments often comes after the clinics have closed. I’ll spend time reviewing before-and-after photographs, reflecting on each patient’s treatment plan and the small clinical decisions that helped achieve the final result.
For me, it feels much like completing a piece of artwork. I enjoy carefully assessing each case, exploring the available treatment options, and seeing how thoughtful planning can create meaningful improvements for my patients.
Although treatments such as veneers or smile makeovers may appear straightforward, every case involves detailed planning and careful consideration of a patient’s facial features, dental condition and personal goals. Every smile is unique, which makes every treatment both interesting and rewarding.
Supporting Patients Through Dental Trauma
Because of my own experience as a child, I have always felt a strong connection to patients who have suffered dental injuries. I have a particular interest in helping children and families facing these situations.
Even now, I will often stay back to treat emergency dental trauma cases, especially when children are involved. Seeing an anxious parent worrying about their child’s injured tooth reminds me of my own experience. Sharing my story often helps reassure families that I understand their concerns and that positive outcomes are possible.
Continuing My Education in Restorative Dentistry and Digital Smile Design
My passion for restorative and aesthetic dentistry has encouraged me to continue learning throughout my career. I have completed advanced education with internationally recognised clinicians, including Christian Coachman in New York, Pascal Magne and Didier Dietschi in Switzerland, Angelo Putignano and Professor Fradeani in Italy, and Paolo Kano in Brazil.
This ongoing commitment to professional development eventually led me to complete my Mastership in Digital Smile Design.
Looking Ahead
As I look towards the future, my goals remain simple.
For my children, I hope they grow up understanding that true success isn’t measured only by career achievements or professional titles. I want them to value kindness, resilience, integrity and the importance of finding work that brings purpose and fulfilment.
For my dental practices, my vision has always been to create welcoming environments where patients feel genuinely cared for. Rather than building the biggest dental clinics in Perth, my focus is on creating practices where people feel heard, respected and confident in the treatment they receive.
Looking back at the frightened 12-year-old girl after that schoolyard accident, I never could have imagined the direction my life would take. What felt like a devastating experience at the time became the foundation for my career and continues to influence the way I care for every patient today.
For that, I will always be thankful.
